Lost in this clay (Behind the song)
It was 1966 and I had just arrived in New York by plane from Sacramento California. I was just a young 19 year old somewhat lost in this clay still wondering what I would eventually do with my life and how it would end up. There were many wondering young people in New York in 1966 especially in Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side. They were called Hippies back then but that didn’t describe the pain and need many were going through. I meet George West in the Lower East Side one evening. He lived in an apartment there that he opened up to help many of those ‘lost in this clay’. I had enjoyed having conversations with him about the Bible and things grew to a point that we got together every week but it had to be at 3 am because of his night shift job. But each week there were at least one or two others that had come off the street to benefit from his generous shelter. We had good and deep discussions. So many were looking for direction. What direction they eventually went not all were known. But they were encouraged by the discussions and even one young run away girl returned home to her mother in Staten Island to her mother’s great happiness. The months of considerations with many lost in this clay at least provided encouragement during this difficult time for those looking for some steering direction and answers to important questions. It was a time beneficial for me as well for afterward the clay found its direction for me.

LOST IN THIS CLAY
I STARTED OUT ON THE WESTERN SHORELINE
JUST SEARCHING FOR HOME
I WAS A WONDERING WHERE I WOULD GO
WHERE IWOULD STAY ,WHERE I WOULD STAY
WHEN IT WAS NOT BUT A MOMENT
THAT I SAW YOU IN LIFES SHADOWS
THAT YOU CRIED FROM THE CLOUDS, With with words ever So grieving
(chorus)
BE GONE FROM ME PLEASE
FOR I HAVE NOTHING
AND I M LOST IN THIS CLAY
AND I M LOST IN THIS CLAY
HAD I KNOWN THAT YOU WERE BROKE DOWN
I’D A BEEN THERE BEFORE
YOU SEE I WAS LOST IN MY OWN WAY
AND I COULD NOT SEE
AND I COULD NOT SEE
OH MIGHT I TAKE YOU THIS MOMENT
THAT YOU MIGHT FIND MY ARMS REST
THAT THEY GIVE YOU CONSOLATION
AND THE WORDS MAY EVER FLEE YOU
(CHORUS)
