It is said so many times, ‘just follow your heart’ And while the idea might be to focus on following a genuine, sincere action and motivation, the wise words at Jerimiah 17:9 state, “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate .Who can know it?” The world is filled with atrocities that came from a treacherous heart. If the heart is well trained with good values and principles then it might be something to follow. But if emotion and self centered desires drive it we might end up disappointed and shipwrecked. As the song says , “there is battle that is raging outside the fortress of my mind” meaning major influences and pressures to decide things that could change the course of the rest of our life or at least occupy it to its determent all the way to our dyeing day. Such a sidetracked detour in our life ends up wasting the life we have and brings no happiness. An Ancient King who was a son of Solomon allowed his heart to be influenced by those unwise. inexperienced and younger individuals around him and chose a course that affected negatively a whole Nation for the rest of its existence-(Read 1 Kings 12:6-20) We have to “tame this fire inside” but not successfully with a treacherous heart but rather if we use our genuine and principled heart if we only, really Try. These are the motivations behind the song , “If we only try”.
