As I sat in 1988 in my home on Lambright st in Tampa, Florida it was clear that as the outside afternoon storms set in , this was a beautiful moment in time that would soon be history. That kind of history produces cozy memories to be relished and leaves no pain with it. But so many other memories even though only one day behind leave one astonished with pain and suffering as its fate. The news events of 1988 produced such memories whether they be the explosion in the plane over Lockerbie , the 1.5 million lives lost in the Iran-Iraq war that ended in 1988 or The explosions and fire at the Piper Alpha drilling platform in the North Sea.
“A brief History of time” was released by Stephen Hawking in 1988 but it spoke of a larger history one of an expanding universe and the earth being circular but those conclusions took more than one day to ascertain and left no stain with it! But the millions of lives changed in the one day by the tragedies above threw those involved into a world of disbelief and numbness that forever changed their lives in one day. The song “Why is History only one day behind” is about being in that world of disbelief and numbness and although not dealing with these horrible things directly that state of mind formed the template for all negativity that one day can make even in smaller circumstances.
However History can change in a positive way in just one day. Especially when one finds something that changes ones life forever to the good. Those that found that thousands of years of erroneous beliefs about the earths shape and support were corrected by two texts changed their lives is such a day. The texts were penned hundreds of years before the Greeks finally accepted that the earth was a circle and also more recently that the universe was expanding as mentioned by Hawking, those scientifically correct words at Isaiah 40:22 established, “There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers, the One who is stretching out the heavens just as a fine gauze, who spreads them out like a tent in which to dwell.” and Job 26:7 adds another scientific truth, ” He is stretching out the north over the empty place, Hanging the earth upon nothing” Such words began a new trek of an ever increasing faith in just one historical day for many.
All the above about what one day can do formed the influence behind the song.
