Cowboy hats guitars and you (Behind the song)
My father was a professional musician all of his life. He was the lead Guitarist on two west cost (California) television shows called ‘The Hoffman Hayride’ and the ‘Biggie Jamboree’. One of his main showmanship performances was to put the guitar behind his head and play the song ‘Under the double eagle’ flawlessly using a beer bottle as a pick. My father could play any song by ear. All the family had to do on a song he had never heard is hum a couple of parts and he would play if flawlessly. He was a born a natural. Bobby Black who was in the band with my father and also a famous Steel Guitarist once told me that my father was a great Guitarist and he was saddened at his passing. My father loved to collect and restore antique cars and so he was always in pictures standing by his old car with his cowboy hat on. At one time he had 80 cars in his collection as well as musical instruments especially guitars and banjos. He was also a virtuoso on the Banjo. So you can see why the song is entitled, ‘Cowboy hats guitars and you.’ And the lyrics have him standing by an old car. The last time I saw my Dad he was very sick and lethargic but when my sister and I sang him this song he perked up and became more animated in that moment. I look forward to seeing my father again in the resurrection to life (John 5:28) where he will stand again and have many more years of musical enjoyment. I look forward to be able to jam along with him with my guitar which I had never had the opportunity to do in my younger years.
