Daryll Allen (Behind the song)
The birth of a son is a joyous occasion or at least it should be in this year of 1981. Daryll Allen’s birth brought with it things that should not be. Being born premature the doctors wanted to implement a treatment that his parents were not in conformity with, but were willing to accept a less intense procedure that would be just as successful if not more so with less complications. The parents were in the know for they had studied the matter and the choices ahead of time. However the Doctor evidently feeling his authority was being challenged got a court order and removed Daryll Allen from their custody, so as parents they now had no say in the matter. The doctors could now do as they pleased with whatever treatment. The doctor informed the mother in her weakened state that he had gotten a court order much to her sadness. Daryll Allen’s father took off work and was in the hospital every day so as to observe the treatments metted and to encourage the doctors to please respect the parents wishes. As a result the doctor did not perform the treatment that he wanted and eventually the mother was released from the hospital but without her son. A social worker came frantically saying that her son was going to be released to a foster home because the court had removed the parents as caretakers of the child and could not return custody to the parents. She had all the documents prepared to return legally things back to normal they just needed a signature. As the documents were signed she mentioned that she was surprised and shocked that the child had been taken away from responsible parents as those of Daryll Allen. All seemed well and finally the joyous occasion could finally be experienced. But it was short lived for a few months later Daryll Allen had to be taken as an emergency to the All Children’s Hospital in Saint Petersburg, Florida do to a seizure. As the wise words say at Ecclasiastes 9:11 say , “I have seen something further under the sun, that the swift do not always win the race, nor do the mighty win the battle, nor do the wise always have the food, nor do the intelligent always have the riches, nor do those with knowledge always have success, because time and unexpected events overtake them all.” These were certianly a series of unexpected events! After a week there the Parents finally went home with their son and finally the joy of a new life in the home was totally experienced. The song Daryll Allen was written during this September month of 1981. The song addresses the hope of a proud father as a hyperbole of walking on the water and the sun. And in spite of the hardships they would all come out victorious. I know , because that’s my son!
