Destin to fall (Behind the song)
The year was 1984 and I had been restoring Automobile interiors and selling some vehicles when an opportunity came along to become a captive sub-contractor for a company that sold packaging materials and needed someone to fabricate these materials such as crates, and cardboard and foam inserts etc. to go into packages. They also needed someone to set up the warehouse with metal shelving, organized indexed aisles so merchandise could be easily located. Also a manufacturing section and a wood shop needed to be set up for fabrication. I thought maybe I could get a functioning business set up where I wouldn’t have to be a one man show, having employees and also having more time for my family and other important things. Dreams sometimes have no way of materializing no matter how hard you think they will. And sometimes they start out on the wrong premise. As the wise words at Ecclesiastes 9:12 warn, “For man does not know his time. Just as fish are caught in an evil net and birds are caught in a trap, so the sons of men are ensnared in a time of disaster, when it suddenly overtakes them”. Sometimes when the outlook looks bright the darkness that overshadows it leaves one disillusioned. The act that should have brought a realization is when I was shown the shower next to the office and told I could go out around 6 pm to get something to eat and then return to continue with the work projects late into the evening. But that was only the beginning of darkness and disasters. As time went on I hired employees, bought trucks to make deliveries, purchased construction materials on credit. Then all of a sudden colossal mistakes were made by some employees causing a large monetary loss, trucks were involved in accidents and mechanical failures costing thousands. Major medical problems arose requiring hospitalization and creating an inability to continue the management of the business. It was a loss leaving a $30000 debt. As Proverbs 13:23 states, “The plowed field of the poor yields much food, But it may be swept away by injustice”. Needless to say someone moved in at this moment for the kill to snatch up what had been built up. It became as said in Ecclesiastes 4:6, “Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of hard work and chasing after the wind”. This text really is focusing on the workaholic who doesn’t take other important things into consideration only over working. Hard work is good but not in this context. These were the things and experiences in a nutshell caused the inspiration of the song “Destin to fall”.
