Tell me a story (Behind the song)
It was in the mid sixty’s there were so many young people lost and lonely in New York City. Some had left home, others kicked out looking now for shelter in the big city. The song , ‘Tell me a story’ was about this time and the experience of those captured in this time warp. Freedom from the parental chains seems like a great escape at first until the realization hits one that it costs to live and there is no free lunch. And on your own can be quite lonely. I met many of these escapees during those years in the mid sixties who had many questions about the meaning of life and its purpose. In the lower east side of Manhattan lived a gentleman who welcomed many of these lost kids to his apartment when he found them sleeping on the street. Since I regularly every week had a discussion with him about the Bible and its meaning for our times I met many of these young ones and had an opportunity to hear their stories and answer their questions. Many were lost due to unjust treatment by family members which caused them to leave. But there is hope for such lost ones just as Ezekiel 34:16 comforts, “The lost one I will search for, the stray I will bring back, the injured I will bandage, and the weak I will strengthen; but the fat one and the strong one I will annihilate. I will feed that one with judgment.” So those fat possibly due to their abuse of innocent ones will be judged and dealt with, but the lost ones will be strengthened and cared for. These discussions helped some get through this hard time so that their sad stories became only a small blip in their long and happy life. ‘Tell me a story’ is about their story.
LYRICS
I WAS LEFT OUT IN THE CITY WITH ONLY
A HANDFULL
OF CHANGE
I WAS FEELING MIGHTY PRETTY — BECAUSE MY HANDS HAD BEEN TIED BY THE REINS
MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME A STORY LIKE MINE
MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME A STORY FOR ALL TIME
BECAUSE I AM ON — MY OWN, IM ON — MY OWN I AM ON — MY OWN
SHE WAS LOST A CHILD OF PITY-CRUSHED AND BROKEN — FROM PAIN
I HAD MET HER IN THE CITY-WITH NOT EVEN A HOPE —- TO ENTERTAIN
MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME A STORY LIKE HERS
MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME OF HER CHILDHOOD TEARS
HER WORDS KEEP RINGING IN MY EARS, THEY KEEP RINGING IN MY EARS
THEY KEEP RINGING IN MY EARS
SHE WAS LIKE A GHOST — TO HER FAMILY — NAME
THROWN OUT INTO THE WORLD LIKE A KITTY, WHEN HER NOVELTY WAINED
MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME A STORY LIKE HERS
MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME OF HER CHILDHOOD TEARS
HER WORDS KEEP RINGING IN MY EARS, THEY KEEP RINGING IN MY EARS
THEY KEEP RINGING IN MY EARS
(repeat from “3rd maybe” to 3rd “ears” THEN INTRO G Am7 C G Am7 Am C G then repeat first
verse/chorus and end
