You’re my friend (Behind the song)
A sad 4 year old little boy tugs at a father’s heart. Your’re my friend was written to remove those sad eyes from my little son. I sang him to sleep with those words. I did all I could to be a good father although not perfect I strived to let him know I loved and cared for him. I tried never to irritate him as the wise words at Ephesians 6:4 state, “And fathers, do not be irritating your children, but go on bringing them up in the discipline and admonition of Jehovah.” Irritation to a child is when one doesn’t show love , is harsh and inflexible, .inconsistent not meaning or fulfilling what one says . It is as Matthew 5:37 states, “Just let your word ‘Yes’ mean yes, your ‘No,’ no, for what goes beyond these is from the wicked one.” It is difficult do all these things perfectly but that was my goal and focus to never exasperate my son. Colossians 3:21 admonishes , “You fathers, do not be exasperating your children, so that they do not become downhearted”. So the song became just one of the ways to counteract his sadness and make him feel worthy, valuable and needed. As a couple my wife and never belittled, or put down our children but always encouraged them and made them feel highly prized and valued.
